Anders Gaardmand/Pelle von Bülow Quartet
Friday den 6. February kl. 21:00 - 01:00
Anders Gaardmand is a legend in the Danish music scene. Not only did he have a major career in the 70s rock scene, but his saxophone playing also graces countless pop productions from that era. Later, he enjoyed a successful period as a club musician in New York. Since returning to Copenhagen, he has carried on the legacy of the great American jazz saxophonists like Dexter Gordon and King Curtis. Anders is backed by a strong, young team featuring guitarist Pelle von Bülow as co-leader.
Line-up
Saxophone
Anders Gaardmand is a versatile and respected Danish saxophonist (tenor and baritone) who has left a solid mark on both the Danish and American music scenes. After spending ten years in New York playing with legends like Etta James and Dr. John, he returned home with a unique, blues-soaked, and funky sound. He is a long-time member of the Danish Radio Big Band and a frequent bandleader at venues like La Fontaine, delivering energetic jazz with soul.
Drums
Frands Rifbjerg is one of the most respected and distinctive drummers in Danish jazz. With a style that is both deeply rooted in tradition and uncompromisingly modern, he has for decades been an indispensable collaborator for the very best—from Carsten Dahl to international soloists. He is renowned for his phenomenal ability to “color” the music and for a touch that encompasses everything from explosive energy to the most delicate, lyrical responsiveness. As a recipient of the prestigious Ben Webster Prize, Rifbjerg has cemented his status as a musician who consistently prioritizes musical presence and storytelling over technical display.
Guitar
Pelle von Bülow is one of the most sought-after jazz guitarists on the Copenhagen scene. In 2022, he was awarded the Erik Moseholm Prize, and in 2020, he also received the Tivoli Jazz Prize for his extraordinary artistic integrity and sonic presence. As an accompanist, he is world-class and one of the few who can move effortlessly between jazz, Latin, blues, funk, R&B, and pop. In addition to his work in the jazz community, he is also a permanent member of Erran DD’s band, Drori Hansen’s Furniture. His ability to create a unique sound and tone, along with his deep musical understanding, makes him a leading figure in Danish jazz.
Bass
Rune Fog-Nielsen is a rising Danish jazz bassist who has rapidly established himself as a central figure among the new generation of Danish jazz musicians. Despite his young age, Fog-Nielsen has already distinguished himself as a “super-talent” and one of Denmark’s future bass stars. He is known for his deep, melodic double bass playing and his respect for the jazz tradition, particularly within hard bop. His collaborations with acclaimed names such as Thomas Franck, Christina von Bülow, and international stars testify to his recognized talent on the Scandinavian jazz scene.
